Project Description
For the Büsumer Lichterwochen 2024, Kuenstner was responsible for the conceptual design, visual storytelling, and content production of an immersive 3D projection mapping on Büsum’s town hall. The installation formed a central visual highlight of the festival and transformed the historic façade into a living narrative canvas.
The goal of the project was to create an emotionally engaging glimpse into Büsum’s local history, making heritage visible, accessible, and atmospheric for a broad audience.
Artistic & Narrative Concept
At the heart of the show was a site-specific storytelling approach. The architectural features of the town hall were carefully integrated into the content design, allowing windows, edges, and surfaces to become active narrative elements.
The projection journey guided visitors through key moments and motifs of Büsum’s history—from maritime life and coastal heritage to the town’s cultural identity—translated into a contemporary visual language. Rather than presenting history as a timeline, the show focused on evoking memories, moods, and transformations, blending historical references with modern, immersive aesthetics.
Subtle transitions, spatial depth, and architectural illusions were used to enhance the three-dimensional impact and draw viewers into the story unfolding directly on the building.
Technical Realization & Collaboration
The technical planning, setup, and execution of the projection mapping were carried out by Walter System (Marne, Germany), who also acted as the project’s client. Their expertise in event technology ensured precise alignment, reliable playback, and a high-quality visual result under outdoor conditions.
The close collaboration between Kuenstner and Walter System allowed creative intent and technical execution to merge seamlessly—resulting in a stable, visually striking installation that performed consistently throughout the event.
Result & Impact
The immersive projection mapping became a strong focal point of the Büsumer Lichterwochen 2024, attracting large audiences and inviting both locals and visitors to rediscover Büsum’s heritage in a new light. By combining historical storytelling with contemporary media art, the project successfully connected past and present, reinforcing the cultural value of the location through light and motion.
